Good morning Las Vegas. It's Sandra Pollard, it's where I am. Thank you for tuning in, and I want to welcome my fabulous co host today. Miss Ariana, hello, caramel, thank you for jumping in today.
Ariana Caramat 1:06
Girl, yeah. I mean, you called and I said, okay, yeah, I needed a
Zandra Polard 1:10
co host today. I was nervous. I need some, like, somebody to talk to, like, bounce some stuff off of, you know, I'm always here, you know, you came on before, and we were talking about gentle parenting, and that is just not our style. It's not I'm like, sit down and let's get started. So we're going to do that now. We are sitting down and we're going to get started. So today we have a special guest calling in. Chris Spencer will be on the line, and he is talking about his new stand up comedy, which is on Hulu, yeah. So it is called goat adjacent, which I think is a fabulous name, because Chris has been in the business a very long time. He's been a writer, or He is a writer, and currently writing for the Image Awards. So really glad he's here. I've talked about his movie back on the strip before I'm in like the first five seconds of the movie, so it's worth watching. So Ariana, before Chris calls in, we were talking about kind of like back in the day, you know, I was in my nostalgia of the 90s, yeah, and I was telling all the fun I used to have, yeah, and you told me, you said, Well, you're still fun now. Well, thank you. Thank you. I like to have a good time. Yes, you do. Yeah. So if you haven't seen go to Jason. Now it's not totally clean. There is some language, you know, there is some language. So it's not for a family, but like 21 and overs. So Ariana, what did you think about it? I found it hilarious.
Ariana Caramat 3:30
I mean, when he started talking about, what was he talking about the sibling of the celebrity?
Zandra Polard 3:36
Oh yes, yes, we don't want to spoil it, but yes, that is so true. Yeah, right. You know, I used to watch Oprah a lot, and Oprah and other talk show hosts, they would have the celebrity sibling on, and they would look like the celebrity Somewhat, yeah, yeah, somewhat. And we'll leave it at that, no spoilers. Yeah, no spoilers. But you know, quite a few questions, you know, I want to know, because he does talk about his family a lot, his marriage, his kids, and I'm wondering how the kids are receiving it now.
Ariana Caramat 4:21
How old are his kids? Oh,
Zandra Polard 4:23
I'm not quite sure, but I know they're like, college age, okay, yeah. Do you know my dad? Have you seen my dad? He's on Hulu, right? Or maybe not, because of the things that he says, Oh, that's true. Yeah, that's true, 21 and up, 21 and up. Yeah, I want to know how they feel about it. So anyway, Chris is gonna call in. We're waiting on you.
Ariana Caramat 4:49
Chris, so Zandra, how do you know Chris?
Zandra Polard 4:53
Oh, girl, I've known Chris since the 90s. Yeah. So my. Sister and I were roommates, and we lived in this apartment building in Hollywood. And I swear everybody was living there, like everybody who was trying to make it was living in this building. And Chris lived there as well, and he was always writing, yeah, and I didn't know what he was writing, but then I would just see him in a movie, which was weird. And you know, I have to say, one time I went out and I saw him at the premiere for the movie higher learning. And all of a sudden he jumps up and he says, Oh, come on, let's go dance. So we're on the dance floor, and it's just Chris and I. And then I look over to my right, and it's John single. John Singleton, late. John Singleton and Tyra Banks. And when I tell you, you know, there's a movie out with Tyra, there's a docu series, and I'm telling you, this lady was not nice if she could have stepped on my toe one more time and bumped into me, I guess she thought maybe I shouldn't have been on the dance floor. She said it was my dance floor, I guess so. But Chris and I were cutting the rug, as you should. So, fun times, fun times. And then there was something else
Ariana Caramat 6:36
seen. Well, he's been on the show before, right?
Zandra Polard 6:39
Yeah, he's been on a couple times, yeah? Well, we're the so usually we talk about like, Valentine's Day. You know, post Valentine's Day, what your wife may have expected, or your girlfriend, etc. But you can find all those shows, whatever we do. I think we did about three of them. You can find them on Spotify, Apple, Google, whatever is your podcast platform that you love, just type in. It's where I am. Sandra Pollard, and there it will be.
Ariana Caramat 7:17
So what would be your favorite movie from Chris,
Zandra Polard 7:21
you know, I have to say, after the one I'm in for five seconds, it would be the cult classic. Don't be a menace while drinking your juice in the hood. Yeah, I like that one. And he wrote that as well. Yeah, all right, yeah, yeah. But he's done other stuff. Like, there's a myriad of things. Like, I don't have his IMBD up, but he's been around. And then he won a Grammy for, I think it was a Grammy. He wants something for the real husbands of Hollywood, yeah. So he's producer, executive producer, and writer for that,
Ariana Caramat 8:04
oh yeah, as well, yeah. I want to know what his experience doing that was like, because he had a whole myriad of of actors, yeah.
Zandra Polard 8:14
Well, he writes for Yeah, Kevin Hart, yeah, Tiffany Haddish, yeah. He's got a whole Yeah, he's done so much. And I wish I had his bio up, but it's somewhere in an email, so I don't know, but folks out there know him. If you don't know his name, you know, trust me, you are familiar with his work. Yes, you'll know him. You know what? Ariana, let's play a snippet of his Hulu special. It's out right now. I knew I had to
Chris Spencer 8:45
lose the weight because I was trying to figure out why my wife won't do it to me. And then I saw myself naked in the mirror. I was like, ah, there it is, right. There. I am built like a drug lord. Look at this. I look like Pablo ice cream bar. Okay, so I need I wasn't in bad shape. I was built like the celebrity's brother. Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about. You ever see the celebrity on the red carpet and then his brother right next to look exactly alike. If the celebrity didn't make it. You see the rock. You see the boulder. A little chubby dude, like this same skin tone, haircut. You see, did it? You see, he's coat in the bags. Take that. Take that. You see, will i am and no, I won't. He's got a muffin top. He looks like he had all the Black Eyed Peas look. Let me tell you something. While I was doing this, I tried all the diets, right? And all the diets work, keto, paleo, intermittent fasting. You do it for 30 days, you'll lose 10 pounds. But on day 31 if you look at a muffin, 46 pounds are coming. Right? My problem, ladies gentlemen, is it's always sugar for all of us, sugar, right? And supposedly, they say that sugar is 100 times more addictive than heroin or cocaine. Y'all believe that? I've never seen a sign that says for a snicker.
Zandra Polard 10:19
So here he is. Chris Spencer, today, thank you for calling in. Absolutely, man. We've been talking about your stand up.
Chris Spencer 10:32
Listen, you were there in the beginning. Yes, you saw when I was getting paid in popsicles and Snickers.
Zandra Polard 10:38
Yes, I was talking about when we went on the dance floor with Tyra Banks and the late John Singleton, remember
Chris Spencer 10:45
that I do not Whoa,
Zandra Polard 10:49
yeah. It was the Higher Learning.
Chris Spencer 10:52
Oh yeah, Premiere after party, yes. Great memory. Jeepers, creepers.
Zandra Polard 10:59
Oh, I remember everything I had so much fun back then. Yeah, good, yeah. And I'm so glad that our friendship has lasted the test of time
Chris Spencer 11:13
almost 30 years, right? Yeah, well, 1994 maybe 90 right around there.
Zandra Polard 11:20
Yep, something like that. So I wanted to ask you, yes, ma'am, how do your kids feel about the special?
Chris Spencer 11:31
They love it. They love it. They love Dave. The material grows. You know what I mean? Everybody is, you know, I've tested stuff on them. I've asked them about stuff, will you be offended by this? Bother you? And they're like, No, we love it.
Zandra Polard 11:45
Okay, yeah, because I was like, if I was a kid, I don't know if I'd like, you know, my parent talking about me.
Chris Spencer 11:53
No, it's a comedic household. My wife is funny. Yes, the grandparents are funny. Everybody's funny so
Zandra Polard 12:01
and I love that you talked about your father.
Chris Spencer 12:04
Yeah, he's the one I'm worried about getting mad. You're not supposed to say, tell the world that your dad is is a nasty old man.
Zandra Polard 12:16
Now, I was telling my co host that you remind me of Paul Mooney.
Chris Spencer 12:24
Everybody keeps saying it, so what is that? Oh, oh. Somebody finally broke it down to me. Okay. They said it was Neil Brennan who helped create the Dave Chappelle Show. He said it's the way I pause on a punch line. There you go, yes. So I hit something. I go, did you hear what that? Did you hear what I said? Y'all ain't listening to me. That's, I guess. That's what that's reminiscent of Paul movie, I guess. Okay.
Zandra Polard 12:53
And then how you look around, yeah, the way your eyes go from side to side, that's what I get. Okay? So I'll take it now. I know your wife. She used to write for Jimmy, Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel, right? Or was she a producer? She's a producer. Oh, producer. Okay, so comedy runs in the family. Kids are great with it. You remind me of Paul Mooney, who are your top three comedians that you've looked up to over the years?
Chris Spencer 13:28
Richard Damon, okay?
Zandra Polard 13:33
And Eddie in that order? Yes, I'm surprised Damon is in the middle and He's younger. Oh no. I wasn't putting them in any order. I was just telling you, oh, I said in that order, and you said, Yes, okay.
Chris Spencer 13:46
Oh no, no, no, no, Dave and Richard.
Zandra Polard 13:50
Now I didn't mention it's hard
Chris Spencer 13:52
to do these lists. You know what I mean? Richard's the goat, and then everybody else falls underneath. You know what I mean.
Zandra Polard 13:58
Now, what is it about comedy? It doesn't always stand the test of time, like for us. Richard Eddie, they're always going to be funny to us, yeah, but the younger generation, they don't find them so funny. Why is that?
Chris Spencer 14:18
Because they're not smart. Music, do you like that rap that they like? Oh my god.
Chris Spencer 14:26
It wasn't until, like, you know, Kendrick and some of these other people that kind of said something, that we started liking their music again.
Zandra Polard 14:35
Now look, I love the title of your stand up, goat adjacent. It speaks to your life, and you talk about that, that you've always been kind of like the backbone, I would say to the
Chris Spencer 14:54
artist, right? Yeah, many of them, yeah. And what
Zandra Polard 14:58
do you have coming up now?
Chris Spencer 15:00
So after I have a series of a series that we did a 10 part look on black comedy. It's called black comedy in America, where myself, Tiffany Haddish, from a young comedian who's probably one of the hottest comedians right now, named Ryan Davis, introspective look on black comedy from the Chitlin Circuit all the way to the social media guys that we see today, like Desi banks. And one episode is entitled kings of comedy. Another one is deaf Comedy Jam. Another one is Kevin Hart. Another one is 80 sitcoms. Another one is Eddie Murphy. Another one is Dave Chappelle. So it's a compelling look, and you're going to hear from not only comedians, but you're going to hear from Al Sharpton, and we interviewed Marla Gibbs and Dr Boyd, and there's so many other people that were not necessarily stand ups, talking about stand ups, but talking about comedy in general, and how it has shaped their lives, how they were affected. They can remember everything so funny. You'll hear so many people have the same stories that you probably have, sneaking downstairs and listening to a tape of Richard Pryor because you know you weren't supposed to be listening to that stuff.
Zandra Polard 16:17
Well, when can we see that it's on right now?
Chris Spencer 16:20
No, it's on YouTube. It's on to be it's on Roku, it's on vice TV. It's on the LOL network.
Zandra Polard 16:33
I'm watching it tonight. First episode
