You're listening to special programming brought to you by it's where I am.com The content of this program does not reflect the views or opinions of 91.5 jobs and more University of Nevada, Las Vegas or the Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education.
Zandra Polard 0:52
Good morning, Las Vegas, it's Zondra polearm. It's where I am. And I am here today at 91.5. Jazz and more. So you know, this program is about mental health and wellness. But we also like to include that physical and emotional piece. today. My guest is Dr. Yvette Wilson. And she is so awesome. I know her from back in the day when I was a mature student at Nevada State College. She was there. But she has now moved on to Arizona College of Nursing on the Las Vegas campus. So welcome. Welcome. And thank you for coming.
Speaker 2 1:36
Thank you so much for having me here. I'm so excited. It's been a while since we've been together. I
Zandra Polard 1:41
know used to have so much fun. You were always the favorite teacher on campus, I must say. And I know you're doing some things coming up, you told me you that you're involved in this symposium for nursing and you're going to be one of the key speakers. Yeah, so please tell us about what's going on. On August the 18th. Yes,
Speaker 2 2:04
so August 18 and 19th. I, along with about eight or nine other visor board members and past recipients, nursing recipients. and myself will actually be doing a leadership symposium and this is called a Margaret Curley, rural and frontier Nursing Symposium. It's actually over two days, it's on the 18th and the 19th. And we're actually going to be it's just a platform for them to disseminate scholarly information. My portion of it is a little bit more of the personal growth and leadership development. But it is going to be an amazing event starts on that Friday from 530 to 830. Okay, and it's going to be virtual. It's also Saturday, August 19, from 8am to 12:30pm. So people can attend virtually from the comfort of their home and nice. And for all the nursing professionals that out there because you know we love our CPUs is they get seven cu nursing credits. Oh, nice. And the boy eating some cereal. No, right. And the best thing about it is the the fun support the rural and frontier Nursing Scholarship. So just to let people know a little bit about the Nevada nurses foundation, that is one of the We Are the funding arm of the Nevada Nurses Association, we who act who advocates for the nursing profession here in the state of Nevada. And one of the things that they do is actually fundraise and try to relieve some of the burden of the financial burden off of off of students. And so that's expensive. Lily, yes, it is. And so they actually, you know, that's one of the things they have two or three big fundraiser of the year, okay to fundraise. We had an amazing time earlier this year at the Reno Carson City and it's the High Tea fundraiser. It's at the governor's mansion. So that's one way it's usually in Reno. And then they alternate years and we have the shining star which is coming up, okay. And that is going to be here in Alicante, North Las Vegas, so they alternate each years. And I want to tell you a little bit about that as we move forward in the show. Sure. Sure. So
Zandra Polard 4:26
there are two different fundraisers that you are speaking up. Here it is. Okay, so the last one you spoke of was the shining star. Yes. Okay. So the shining star you do you have to be a nursing student for the shining star.
Speaker 2 4:41
No, the shining star is kind of like our gala. I always say it's like a big Hollywood event. You get to dress up in your nice evening gowns. And it is this is actually the eighth annual one that they are going to be having. This event is on October the fourth Cheap, which is a Saturday time to get dressed. However, some of the deadlines, and this is what I really wanted to make sure people are aware of. For this one, this is a great way to recognize those nurses that are out there, we have some amazing nurses that are out there doing a lot of amazing things. And this is a great way for employers or just colleagues and peers to recognize their peers. And so the shining star, there's, they have over 10 or so different recognition categories. And some of those are closing up. So I want to make sure August 1 and August 15, we have a couple of them closing up. So if people are interested, we have won this distinguished nurse leader, okay with a lifetime achievement award that was closing up August 1. So if you know of anyone, not August 1, it closed August 1 15th is what is closed. But if you have anybody in that category, you want to make sure that you are getting them we have a 50 under 50 category. You can do cnoc, you can do educators Dean's so there are a lot of different
Zandra Polard 6:07
now do categories see a student to vote for this nurse? Or like can I just vote for somebody that I think is a fabulous nurse out here as
Speaker 2 6:15
Megan? Absolutely, you can vote. And this is not just for, like you say students, this is for employers, you know, they have their nurses, actually professional nurses that are working, okay. If you, they also have what we call a falling star, which I really love this category, because we've had a lot of nurses that may have fallen, or who have passed away in the last year or so. So they actually recognize those nurses as well. So if there's some nurses out there, you know, that's a great way to recognize.
Zandra Polard 6:45
So if you have a loved one who worked as a nurse, you can vote for them, or recommend them, you can for the shining star, and or the falling star that the
Speaker 2 6:58
the falling, falling shoot, well falling star, but they also have another cat, it's like you say this is not only about recognizing them, but maybe you want to honor somebody, right. And so we have ways that people can participate by naming a scholarship maybe after a loved one or someone and making that an opportunity that you can give away. So that's just another way that people can participate. There's so many different ways. Silent Auction, we have silent auction, if you can't buy an auction ticket or you know, donate an auction item, perhaps that's another way to participate. Okay, it's gonna be a whole VIP dinner. And it's just going to be a really great way to connect with people. For us as nurses and health professionals. It's a great way to connect, meet with your colleagues, your peers, yes. But also just recognizing all the hard work that they do every day. Absolutely.
Zandra Polard 7:52
So if anyone wants to donate, purchase a ticket, however, they may want to participate in this event called the witches the annual shining star of nursing, nursing. How do they do that? What is the information they need? Do they go to a website? Do they call a number?
Speaker 2 8:14
Yes, for more information about any way because like you say there's a sponsorship, so any type of way to participate, you can go to envy nurses, foundation.org, that's envy, nurses foundation.org, you can register there, the nominations and the categories are there. And it will give you a little bit more detail about each one of those different categories. You can find out more about the actual event itself and the schedule of events. And so there's just a lot of different ways that you can participate. And again, this is really going I think to one of the really great things that we can do to really serve our citizens here because it's really helping to decrease access to health care. Because you know, we have such a shortage here in Nevada, and trying to get more of the nurses in there and a lot of Miss, you know, money can be that financial burden that that is pretty much a barrier to access. So this is really one way that we can help to reduce that. I
Zandra Polard 9:23
love it. Thank you for sharing that information with us. Now, that is this annual shining star of Nevada. Now you will want to talk about the one where you can sit at home in your PJs and participate. So this is a virtual event and this one is called Yeah,
Speaker 2 9:44
this one is the Margaret Curley rural frontier in Nursing Symposium and that's the one that's on a Tuesday night teen. And, again, this is really just a platform because as nurses part of our profession is to disseminate how do we move Move the nursing profession forward. And one of that is by the research that we're out there doing the different evidence based practice strategies that we're implementing, and the best ways to share that information with each other so that we can all improve our healthcare. And so one way that, you know we do that is by being able to pull together a forum where where we can share the information, share our best practices, share our research that is out there. And for me, I use the platform because I love to grow leaders, and I love to grow and mentor nurses. And so I will be actually speaking on legacy and leadership shaping the future of nurses. And my presentation is really, there as a way to help nurses look past the bedside, look past the impact of what they're doing for that day, and really look at the long term impact that they're making to the people in their lives, the patients that they touch every single families of the family, yes, but also just for health care. In itself, you know, what is? What is your impact? How are you going to make healthcare better today than it was yesterday? What is your impact when you leave? The when you leave? What do you want people to say about the work that you've done, the accomplishments you make? So if you had to look back years from now, how would healthcare be different? And how would you have impacted that health care? So that's what what I'm going to hopefully try to inspire and motivate nurses to to be that change agent. We know, as nurses, we have so much influence. That's right. And a lot of us don't use it in the way that we could use it more we're not we're afraid to use it, you know, and we don't really believe necessarily, that we can make such a change. And so I want to really inspire and motivate people that, you know, they can be that change. And that's
Zandra Polard 12:03
wonderful. Because nurses can also like you said, get some continuing education units. Yeah. So that's awesome. Yes,
Speaker 2 12:10
they can get seven continuing education units for this course.
Zandra Polard 12:16
Okay. And so if someone is out there listening, who would like to, you know, attend this virtually? What website or what information do they need?
Speaker 2 12:26
Yes, for this particular website, there is a link, and it is the H, well, HTTPS, and I will have to post this somewhere. But if you go to Nevada, nurses foundation.org, there is a link for the Margaret Curley, rural symposium, which will be a little bit better than than that, that trying to remember that link there. But yes, any any of that information will be found up under that Margaret, under the Nevada nurses Foundation, and that's the Margaret Curley, rural and frontier Nursing Symposium. And these particular funds go to support the rural and frontier scholarships. Now, that's another area, especially here in Nevada, we have rural areas like Elko and some of these other areas, that it's really hard to get resources and nursing also being one of those resources to those areas. And so that is actually a another way that we're removing that barrier is, is supporting those scholarships for those nurses in those rural areas. That's wonderful.
Zandra Polard 13:38
Yeah, because, you know, when you think of Nevada, you think in Las Vegas, you know, you might think of Reno but you know, think of anywhere else, right? Absolutely. Yeah. So that's very important, because there are people living all over Nevada, and people need access to great health care. So thank you for that. Now, we've talked about all the business do we get all the business off the
Speaker 2 13:59
way? I think I got one more business, though, do want it. Let's do it. Let's do another one. Just only as part of the shining star, you know, we're looking at the health professionals but we also have some amazing students that are out there. And they will also be recognized that that shining star but we're also doing a student Nursing Symposium for them, and so I did want to make sure that we inform the public about this if they are nursing students, this is our free symposium. And it is really an opportunity for students to and this is whatever school because we're we're doing this with the Nevada nurses and Student Association as well as the Nevada Nurses Association and our nurses foundation, but they will have networking time they have some guest speakers they have do like a NCLEX review. And so it's really an opportunity for them to network with their own students and they're different from different schools. And they have raffles and draw Thanks. But this is a wonderful way for them to learn about the Nevada Student Nurses Association, and also meet potential employers, and obtain information about the NCLEX review and nursing school tips. So this is a amazing opportunity for them. And this can also be found at the same website, which is which NV nurses foundation.org If they are wanting additional information or details about about this event as well.
Zandra Polard 15:30
Wonderful. Now, are you done?
Unknown Speaker 15:33
I'm done with the BS.
Zandra Polard 15:34
Okay, you're done with the business now? Let's talk to you. Yeah, no, it's so it really amazes me that you are still making such an impactful difference with people in Las Vegas in terms of nursing, right? Because when I met you, you were, you know, I think you were like that lead or Head Professor at the school I was going to, and you just had all of this love and admiration from students from all the different other schools, you know, and so it's just who you are, just can make a difference in other people's lives. And whether you are in the hospital, or teaching those to be in the hospital. It's very important. Right? Yes. So I appreciate you. And I thank you. And that's why I really, really wanted you on the show. Now, when you are doing your classes, do you guys talk about the stresses of nursing? Because I know they've got to take on a lot of stress?
Speaker 2 16:35
Absolutely. You know, being in health care, just overall health care can be a very stressful environment. Yeah, a high stress environment, I always tell people is unlike any, any industry that you've worked in, we don't we're not like widgets, or there's not when you are, are making life decisions, you know, the things we make hurt you that you can hurt patients, they can kill patients, they can harm our main. And it's unlike any other job, because, you know, we can usually throw it away, fix it, we're back on there, but you can't quite do that with humans. So, so yes, it is a high stress area. And that is incorporated into some of the the courses, you know, we are always looking at self care and, and well being. And just mental, you know, how do we take care of the physical and mental aspect of that? Because we can't, we give a lot. And you know, our cups, we can't give if our cups aren't filled? That's right. And so this is something that we're constantly having to remind our staff, and I think the majority of us probably saw it during the COVID Sure, you know, the burnout is real. And so we have to remember to prioritize our own self care before we can give, you know to others. And so so it is totally incorporated or integrated into the courses and just our daily teachings with with her students.
Zandra Polard 18:08
I have a question Do nurses do they have do they work like, for so long? And then they have a long break? Or they're high turnovers? Like how does that work with nursing? Like if I went to the hospital today, and I saw nurse? Well, I see that same nurse if I were to go back a year or two from from now. Well,
Speaker 2 18:27
I like to say yes, you would, however, with travel nursing, that has made it really easy for nurses to you know, cross the borders, cross the boundaries across different hospitals, just in general Hoss, a lot of nurses will, you know, you might see this one nurse, and she's probably working two or three jobs in the same city. So there's agencies that work within our organization. So I have to say you would probably see some of the long term nurses who commit for a long time to different units. But I have been this is my 30th year as a nurse, and I can tell you that just knowing a lot of my colleagues and watching them, there's a lot of nurses that are literally working multiple hospitals, so you're gonna see them all over. Okay. Yeah. So
Zandra Polard 19:26
we're still in a desperate need of nurses. I know a lot of nurses have dropped off since COVID. You know, it was a little too stressful for quite a few of them. And we're trying to fill a lot of spots, right? Yeah. So if you are interested in nursing, Dr. Wilson is at the Arizona College of Nursing in Las Vegas. Yes, yes. So you can also attend there if you want more information about that school. You can look them up online. Do they have a website you can get?
Speaker 2 19:56
They do have a website. I think if you go to a Uh, just Arizona College of nursing.com that will pull you up to their actual website. We have a lot of different campuses over the nation. But you know, Las Vegas campus is the one that you're looking for forward to here. And so, yeah, they,
Zandra Polard 20:19
well, you know, you can get this broadcast everywhere. Because not only are we broadcasting here at 91.5, jazz and more, you can find us on K, u and v.org. You can also find us on all your major podcast platforms. And so we're not limited to Las Vegas. Okay. Now, I want to talk to you before is because it's almost time to go. I want to talk to you about your
Speaker 2 20:50
wellness center. Yeah, well, it's actually OMA is the online coaching. So it's we do a lot of virtual coaching and workshops, training, I think. So it's not an actual physical life or physical health. But it's more of coaching, optimal health and well being. So we really focus in on my company is Wilson wellness. And we really focus on helping businesses and their employees gain optimal health and well being, we really use a comprehensive approach using the dimensions of wellness. But we also work with health businesses to do executive coaching and leading so we call it work wellness, because we're really, you would not believe how many organizations are out there, like you said, with nurses that are burned out. And because they're burned out of stress, they can't make the health organization meet their goals, because they are stressed and unhappy. And so that is one of the things that we do with them as far as helping them really helping their teams reach their peak potential potential, and helping them to reach their company goals. And
Zandra Polard 21:56
so what type of companies do you work with, you work with a lot, a lot of hospitals, smaller businesses, like we
Speaker 2 22:01
work, we work with health care, organizations, with training or leadership development, training, really self awareness, helping to develop and mentor their employees, specifically leaders, we do executive coaching, so we really work with people that say, you know, maybe you're trying to get that next job or that next promotion or maybe just unsatisfied with the job that you're in, and really just helping them to really clarify and clarity what what it is they're looking for. But how can we get them from where they are to where they are trying to get to?
Zandra Polard 22:35
Okay. Oh, sounds good. Well,
Speaker 2 22:39
